Known as “Lady Day,” Billie Holiday transformed jazz singing through deeply personal phrasing and emotional honesty. Her ability to reshape melody and time made every song feel autobiographical and influenced generations of vocalists.

“I became more and more immersed in the world of music and photography when I inherited Herman’s business in 1955,” Chuck Stewart said of his friend and mentor Herman Leonard. “He was a fantastic artist behind the camera, and everything I know about photography I learned from him. Herman was very good with lighting. I may have subconsciously had that in mind in 1955 when I captured Billie Holiday in similar lighting, with just her face breaking through the darkness.”
