Panorama Ray Herbert American, 1945-1997

Photographer and painter "Panorama" Ray Herbert was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey and made Atlanta his adopted home. Nicknamed for the 1904 Kodak Cirkut camera he used to create sweeping panoramic images, Herbert became one of the city's most distinctive visual storytellers. Often called the "Mayor of Cabbagetown," he documented Atlanta's neighborhoods, characters, and changing landscape through photographs he described as "Living Stills"-images that blended observation, performance, and imagination. Working in both photography and painting, Herbert transformed everyday people into local legends, creating a vivid and enduring portrait of Atlanta's cultural life.
