Harry Underwood went from selling paintings at a flea market to becoming an exhibitor at NYC's Outsider Art Fair for 16 years.

 

 In the late 90s he devised a technique of painting with handmade images and photo collage which he stenciled and painted onto wood panels. Uprooted by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 he moved to Nashville and found work as a tile floor installer. From materials collected at job sites he began his career. In 2001 he started showing his work to strangers eventually displaying them in the lobby of an independent film theater The Belcourt. From there and by involvement with the artist's Co-op gallery "The Plowhaus", he established a reputation within Nashville's burgeoning art scene that led to representation by galleries in the United States, France, and England. 

 

His work portrays absurd and romantic qualities about existence through a distinct color palette and simplified depiction of architecture, plants and human forms. Paintings are titled in large print across skies with penciled paragraphs and sentences that appear scattered willy-nilly between buildings and figures. Subject matter of the written word alternates between humor and wisdom and rarely addresses a serious topic without offering an additional dose of levity.
