About the Artist:
Harry Underwood's journey as an artist is as colorful and unexpected as his paintings. Born in 1969, this self-taught visionary found his calling through an unconventional path. Influenced by the likes of Toulouse-Lautrec and Howard Finster, and inspired by classic literature and film, Underwood has crafted a style uniquely his own.
After being uprooted by Hurricane Andrew in 1992, Underwood relocated to Nashville, where he worked as a tile floor installer. It was from the very materials collected at job sites that he began his artistic career. In the late 90s, Underwood developed his signature technique: a mesmerizing combination of handmade images and photo collage, stenciled and painted onto wood panels.
From Flea Markets to Fine Art:
Underwood's ascent in the art world is a testament to his talent and perseverance. Starting by selling paintings at flea markets, he eventually became a fixture at New York City's prestigious Outsider Art Fair for 16 years. His breakthrough came in 2001 when he began showing his work to strangers, leading to a display in the lobby of Nashville's independent film theater, The Belcourt. Involvement with the artist's co-op gallery "The Plowhaus" further cemented his reputation in Nashville's burgeoning art scene, paving the way for representation by galleries across the United States, France, and England.
Artistic Style:
Underwood's work is characterized by its portrayal of the absurd and romantic qualities of existence. His distinct color palette and simplified depictions of architecture, plants, and human forms create a visual language all his own. Large-print titles span across skies, while penciled paragraphs and sentences are scattered seemingly at random between buildings and figures. The written elements alternate between humor and wisdom, rarely addressing a serious topic without offering an additional dose of levity.
About the Exhibition:
"A Repertoire Of Celestial Absurdities" offers a comprehensive look at Underwood's oeuvre, showcasing his ability to blend visual and textual elements into cohesive, thought-provoking pieces. Visitors to the exhibition will find themselves immersed in Underwood's unique perspective on life, love, and the human condition, all presented with a playful twist that invites both contemplation and laughter.
Don't miss this opportunity to experience the celestial absurdities and earthly wisdom of Harry Underwood's art at Different Trains Gallery in Decatur, GA.
