October 26, 2019 (Decatur, Georgia 30030) -- DIFFERENT TRAINS GALLERY (432 East Howard Avenue no. 24) is proud to present a one-woman show by Atlanta-based artist Luzene Hill. "Now that the Gates of Hell are Closed…" is an exhibition of new drawings that "challenge male dictated hierarchies" and "advance female agency".
When Hill went to college right after high school, a professor opened the first day of class by asking "young ladies" on the front row to "please cross your legs". They complied, quizzically, then the professor stated, "now that the gates of hell are closed, we can begin". These drawings are her response to his remark, decades later, as she will always remember that moment. It didn't make her angry at the time, just uncomfortable and annoyed, but it does now!
Luzene Hill is a multi-media artist, best known for her socially-engaged, conceptual installations, reflecting interdisciplinary scholarship in visual art, women's studies and Native American culture. An enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee, Hill has exhibited throughout the US, in Canada, Russia, Japan and the UK. Awards include the 2019 Ucross Fellowship, 2016 Native Arts and Cultures Foundation Fellowship in Visual Arts, 2015 Eiteljorg Fellowship and 2015 First Peoples Fund Fellowship. Her work is featured in Susan Powers' book, "Cherokee Art: Prehistory to Present", Josh McPhee's "Celebrate People's History!: The Poster Book of Resistance and Revolution", and the PBS Documentary, "Native Art NOW!".
