1963 | Portrait session for Don’t Play Me Cheap

ARTIST CONTEXT

Tina Turner was already developing the electrifying vocal and stage presence that would make her one of the most commanding performers in popular music. Her early work with Ike Turner combined R&B, soul, blues, and rock-and-roll intensity.

CHUCK STEWART / PHOTOGRAPH CONTEXT

Don’t Play Me Cheap was released during the duo’s Sue Records period. Stewart’s portrait became one of the many album-cover assignments that documented performers at pivotal moments in their careers.
