ARTIST CONTEXT
Called the “Queen of the Blues,” Dinah Washington was a commanding vocalist and pianist whose roots in gospel informed her jazz, blues, R&B, and pop performances. During the 1950s, she dominated the R&B charts and crossed into the pop mainstream with “What a Diff’rence a Day Makes.”
