ARTIST CONTEXT
Yusef Lateef was a multi-instrumentalist, composer, educator, and early pioneer in bringing global instruments and musical traditions into modern jazz. His sound embraced tenor saxophone, flute, oboe, and instruments from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

After moving to New York in 1960, Lateef became increasingly active as both a leader and sought-after sideman. Stewart photographed him during this fertile period.
