“I became more and more immersed in the world of music and photography when I inherited Herman’s business in 1955,” Chuck Stewart said of his friend and mentor Herman Leonard. “He was a fantastic artist behind the camera, and everything I know about photography I learned from him. Herman was very good with lighting. I may have subconsciously had that in mind in 1955 when I captured Billie Holiday in similar lighting, with just her face breaking through the darkness.”
