biography:
Sonia Rollo was born and brought up near Manchester, England. She attended the University of Glasgow, graduating in 1968 with a B.Sc. degree in Agricultural Botany. For several years, she worked as editor of the scientific journal Chemoreception Abstracts and in 1988 she began to study printmaking at Morley College.

She later co-founded Half Moon Printmakers Cooperative in Brixton, with fellow artists Pip Carpenter and Susie Perring. Sonia is a member of the Southbank Printmakers and the Greenwich Printmakers Association and a past vice-chair of the Printmakers’ Council.

She has exhibited throughout the UK since 1993, and her work has proved particularly popular in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

Sonia grew up surrounded by a selection of different animals including Hilary the pig who would let Sonia ride on her back, Charlie and Cassandra the geese, and a mongrel named Pearl. . While training as a biologist, she had to observe plants and animals, and draw them to aid in understanding. As a printmaker, she enjoys creating images of animals through the etching process.
